1 Porter, Katherine Anne Ship of Fools
Boston Atlantic / Little, Brown 1962 First Edition Hard Cover
[1962]. Very Good+ in a Good dustjacket. Bound in full mustard-yellow cloth. Both the spine and the front panel are stamped in red. Octavo. Marbled endpapers. [xiii] + 497pps. Stated First Edition. There is mild rubbing wear to the tips, a small remnant of a price-label in the upper corner of the ffep., and two creased page-corners. Otherwise clean, bright, square, and soundly bound. No previous ownership markings. The price-clipped dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has rubbing wear with tearing along the folds and shallow chipping with creasing at the extremities. A nice copy of the author's first novel, basis for Stanley Kramer's Oscar-winning film.

"...A novel on a grand scale, and its endless variety of scenes and characters is the variety of life itself. Comedy and tragedy, love and death, boredom and adventure, pain and pleasure -- all are witnessed in the lives and actions of the ship's company of the German freighter-passenger ship Vera embarked from Veracruz, Mexico, and destined for Bremerhaven, Germany. The story covers a period of twenty-seven days in the year 1931.
Many of the passengers are Germans, returning to their homeland from Mexico: the sensual Reiber, who has designs on the coquettish Lizzi; Professor and Frau Hutten, a childless couple; Baumgartner, a hopeless drunkard whose law practice failed in Mexico City; Karl Glocken, a hunchback who has sold out his little tobacco and newspaper stand; Graf, a dying religious enthusiast who believes he has the power of healing; and the corrupt, avaricious zarzuela company of Spanish singers and dancers who scheme to defraud the other passenger of their money..."
