McClellan, George B. McClellan's Own Story : The War For The Union ; the Soldiers Who Fought it, the Civilians Who directed it, and His Relations to it and to Them New York Charles L. Webster & Company 1887 First Edition Cloth Waud, A. R. In Very Good+ condition. Bound in the publisher's full green cloth. The spine is stamped in gilt and black; the decorative front panel in gilt and red. Large octavo. Original floral endpapers. [xiv] + 678pps. with 14 illustrations. There is modest bumping and rubbing wear to the tips and the spine-ends. Touches of fading to the cloth. The gilt of the spine panel is a bit dull, though quite legible; the gilt of the front panel is brilliant. The text is in fine condition, clean and bright, with no previous ownership markings. Having been professionally restored at the Currier Bindery, the binding is now tight with both hinges repaired. In short, a very nice, collector's-quality copy of what is, in essence, the general's self-defense against his detractors. Includes a biographical sketch of McClellan by W. C. Prime.
"...I have thus far abstained from any public reply to the various criticisms and misrepresentations of which I have been the subject, and shall properly preserve the same attitude during the remainder of my life... Moreover, during the civil war I never sought rank nor command. Whatever of that nature came to me by force of circumstances and with no effort of my own. In the performance of the duties thus thrown upon me, I can with a clear conscience say that I never thought of myself or of my own interests, but that I steadily pursued the course which commended itself to me as best serving the true interests of my country, and of the gallant troops whom I had the honor to command. I have, therefore, been able to maintain a calm front under abuse, and -- while far from claiming immunity from error -- have remained satisfied with the conviction that, after my death at least, my countrymen will recognize the fact that I loyally served my country in its darkest hour; and that others, who during their lifetimes have been more favored than myself, would probably have done no better, under the circumstances which surrounded me, when, twice at least, I saved the capital, once created and once reorganized a great army..." -- from McClellan's Introduction.
