Very Good+ in a Very Good+ dustjacket. Black boards quarterbound in black cloth. The spine is silver-stamped. 294pps. Mild rubbing to the board-edges and spine-ends. Also, a previous owner's name and phone number are neatly penned at the top of the ffep. One page has a crease in its upper corner. Otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. The price-clipped dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has touches of crinkling at the extremities; no chips or tears. A nice copy.

"...Cajun police detective Dave Robicheaux knows the Sonnier family of New Iberia -- their connections to the CIA, the mob, and to a former Klansman now running for state office. And he knows their past -- as dark and murky as a night on the Louisiana bayou.
An assassination attempt and the death of a cop draw Robicheaux into the Sonniers' dangerous web of madness, murder and incest. But Robicheaux has devils of his own. And they've come out of hiding to destroy the tormented investigator -- and the people he holds most dear.
Filled with the usual Burke combination of brilliant action and a stunning novelistic theme, A Morning For Flamingos will keep Burke's fans riveted -- and win him many new ones..."

"As I tried to recreate Sam Houston's retreat from the Guadalupe River toward the San Jacinto Basin, I discovered inconsistencies that made no sense. Houston knew the Alamo had just been destroyed in San Antonio seventy miles away and that Santa Anna, with perhaps six-thousand troops, was marching toward Houston's position. Houston had only a few hundred ill-equipped and poorly disciplined men under his command, and it is only reasonable to think that he should have fled eastward immediately before he was encircled and destroyed, as Bowie, Travis, and Crockett had been at San Antonio. Instead, he delayed his retreat for twenty-four hours. In my reading I became fascinated with the historical players in the story. Revisionists sometimes take a pleasure, it seems, in denigrating the lives or deeds of those who become emblematic of what is best in us. But the story of the Alamo is one of inalterable fact. One-hundred eighty-eight Texans held off six-thousand enemy troops for 13 days. Houston sent a letter to Travis and Bowie telling them that no help would be forthcoming; however, they never faltered, never considered surrender, and instead gave their lives to the last man in order to delay Santa Anna's advance into east Texas. In fact, a group of twenty or so volunteers made their way through Mexican lines to join those inside the Alamo, knowing that their lives were automatically forfeit." -- from the author's Introduction.
