Cain, James M. Cain X 3 New York Knopf 1969 First Edition Cloth Very Good+ in a Very Good dustjacket. Bound in full black cloth. The spine is stamped in gilt; the front panel in metallic green. Octavo. viii + 465pps. New Inrtoduction by Tom Wolfe. First Collected Edition (not to be confused with the much more common book club issue: there is no book club slug on the rear panel). There is mild bumping to the spine-ends and faint touches of dustspotting to the fore-edge. Also, the publisher's red 'H' stamp (remaindered?) is on the ffep. Otherwise clean, bright, and soundly bound. No previous ownership markings. The price-clipped dustjacket, glossy in a new mylar sleeve, has modest general edgewear and a light touches of soiling. A nice, collectible copy. Assembles three of Cain's classic novels: 'The Postman Always Rings Twice,' 'Mildred Pierce,' and 'Double Indemnity.'

Cain, James M. The Postman Always Rings Twice New York Knopf 1945 Cloth Very Good in a Near Fine dustjacket. Bound in full orange cloth. Both the spine and the decorative front board are stamped in blue. Blue topstain. 188pps. Stated Fourth Printing, February 1934: issued the same month as the first edition. There is a faint touch of sunning in the area of the spine and a 3/8" tear in the cloth at the heel of the spine; rubbing wear, also, at the lower tips. Internally, there is modest reading wear and the very sporadic fox-mark. The binding is sound and square. No previous ownership markings or inscriptions. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has been married to the volume: it is actually from the Grosset & Dunlap re-print and has the same front-cover artwork. It is, nonetheless, in very nice shape with only a closed tear at the heel of the spine and a faint bit of toning to the rear white panel; no chips, soiling, or (other) tears.

First published in 1934 and banned in Boston for its explosive mixture of violence and eroticism, 'The Postman Always Rings Twice' is a classic of the roman noir. It established James M. Cain as a major novelist with an unsparing vision of America's bleak underside, and was acknowledged by Albert Camus as the model for 'The Stranger'..."
