1 Rister, Carl Coke Border Command (General Phil Sheridan in the West)
Norman, Oklahoma University of Oklahoma Press 1944 First Edition
Fine in a Very Good+ dustjacket. Fully bound in light blue cloth. The spine is stamped in dark blue and gilt. 244pps., plus 11 pages of photos of various players in the western theater and a pull-out map of Sheridan's Winter Campaign of 1868-69. First Edition stated. There is a mild bump at the head of the spine, otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. All tips are sharp. No reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has modest rubbing wear at the spine-ends and a one-and-a-half inch closed tear at the top of the front panel at the gutter. The original price is intact. An excellent copy, overall.

Sheridan's edge-of-the-sword policy halted, in less than a decade, the greatest part of the sanguinary warfare of almost forty years' duration that had hampered settlement and disrupted commerce between the Mississippi and the Rocky Mountains. His campaigns, waged largely in the deep snows of winter to catch the Indians off guard, and the names of the antagonists have become almost legendary in the American story. Sheridan, Sherman, Custer, Miles, Buffalo Bill, Satank, Sitting Bull, and a hundred others are known for their part in the second great war which followed the victory at Appomattox..."
