1 Davies, Robertson One Half of Robertson Davies
New York Viking 1978 0670526088 / 9780670526086 First Edition, First Printing Hard Cover
(1978). Fine in a Very Good dustjacket. Beige boards quarterbound in brown cloth. The spine is stamped in gilt and red. Octavo. 286pps. An excellent copy: clean, tight, square and bright. No reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a new mylar sleeve, is mildly rubbed and has a vertical crease in its rear panel; the original price is intact. ".In this varied, provocative, and enchanting collection of public addresses Roberston Davies' voice reveals his heart, a magical realm where Professor Human Hare and Gates Ajar Honeypot live congenially with Alexander Solzhenitsyn and C. G. Jung, where a carnivorous Dickens eats his readers alive and a demon is chased through centuries of literature. Here, portraits and sketches of the people and places of literature, of insanity, of public works, of academia are drawn with the same vibrancy and care that is the hallmark of Mr. Davies' fictional creations. Whether the voice is castigating architects for building unlivable houses, revealing the age of Aquarius as seen by the ancient alchemists, or pondering the future of Canada, the heart steadily beats out the reason why all of these matters are essential to human existence. 'One Half of Robertson Davies' is a marvelous colloquy with a man whose vast knowledge of literature is equaled only by his vast love of the unknown." 2 Davies, Robertson The Lyre of Orpheus (Cornish Trilogy Ser.)
London Viking Penguin 1988 0-670-82416-X / 9780670824168 First Edition, First Printing SIGNED by the Author
Fine in a Fine dustjacket. Gray boards. The spine is stamped in black. Gray endpapers. 472pps. The pages are slightly and uniformly yellowed due to the acidity of the paper, otherwise clean, tight, and square. No reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has faint touches of crinkling at the extremities; no chips, soiling, or tears. The original price (in pounds) is intact. SIGNED by the author -- without further inscription -- on the title-page. An excellent copy of this final volume in The Cornish Trilogy.

"...'The lyre of Orpheus opens the door of the underworld,' wrote E. T. A. Hoffmann, and Hoffmann's spirit, languishing in limbo, watches over, and comments on, the efforts of the Cornish Foundation as its Trustees decide to produce an opera. The opera in question is an unfinished work by Hoffmann himself, entitled Arthur of Britain, or, the Magnanimous Cuckold, and it is to be completed by the remarkably unprepossessing and thoroughly difficult Hulda Schnackenburg, with a libretto by Simon Darcourt -- biographer of Francis Cornish, the Foundation's posthumous benefactor. As the making of the opera progresses, the participants find its story uncannily mirrored in their own lives, and the emotional tangles that ensue are explored and ultimately unravelled with Davies's characteristic insight and humour. So too are the final mysteries in the life of Francis Cornish, whose legacy is to prove richer and stranger than his heirs could ever have imagined..."
