1 Dinesen, Isak Last Tales
New York Random House 1957 Hardcover
Near Fine in a Very Good+ dustjacket. Bound in full, light gray cloth. The spine is stamped in black and gilt; the front board in gilt. Octavo. Rose-colored topstain. 341pps. Stated second printing. The perimeters of the cloth are faintly faded, otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. All tips are sharp. The textblock is immaculate; no apparent reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The price-clipped dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has modest toning to the rear white panel and very light rubbing wear to the spine-ends; the date-code of 11/57 is in the lower corner of the front flap. An excellent copy, nicely and colorfully jacketed.

"Now after a long silence one of the greatest and least-prolific of modern writers replies to her readers' demand for a new book. In her brilliant and ineffable style, she offers again the enchantments, the ironies, the unexpected revelations of her own created world. But she offers something in a new tone as well: seven tales (one the prologue and one the epilogue) from a novel, 'Albondocani', which has occupied her for many years. Here are exchanges of dialogue in dazzling epigrams, demonic questioning and angelic doubts; here are shown human beings slightly larger than life, of highly crystallized natures, and of an almost legendary intensity. Among the stories are 'The Caryatids,' an unfinished Gothic tale of a couple bedeviled by an old letter and a gypsy's spell; and three tales of winter, including 'Converse at Night in Copenhagen,' a drunken, all-night conversation between a boy-king, a prostitute, and a poor young poet."
