1 Druon, Maurice The She-Wolf of France
London, United Kingdom Rupert Hart-Davis 1960 First Edition Hard Cover
Fine in a Very Good dustjacket. Bound in full burgundy cloth. The spine is stamped in silver. Octavo. 335pps. An excellent, collector's-quality copy: clean, tight, square, and bright. No apparent reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a new mylar sleeve, has a small chip at the top of the front panel and a soil-mark near the top of the rear panel; the original price (18s net) is intact. The fifth book in the author's 'Accursed Kings,' series and the original English language edition, translated by Humphrey Hare.

"Though much of the story takes place in France, where Charles IV is now king, the real focus of interest in is England where his sister, Isabella, is Edward II's Queen. It opens with the escape of Roger Mortimer from the Tower of London, where he had been imprisoned by Edward II as leader of the rebellious barons. It follows him in his exile in France, through the war against the English in Aquitaine and his love-affair with Queen Isabella, the 'She-Wolf of France,' who had come to France nominally to negotiate a treaty of peace, but actually to escape her weak and depraved husband, and in time to wreak her revenge."

2 Druon, Maurice The Strangled Queen
London Rupert Hart-Davis 1956 First Edition Hard Cover
Very Good+ in a Very Good+ dust jacket. Burgundy boards. The spine is stamped in silver. Octavo. 213pps. There is moderate dustspotting to the top of the textblock as well as some slight specks to the fore-edge. Otherwise clean, tight, square and bright. All tips are sharp. No apparent reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dust jacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has a faintly sunned spine, light rubbing wear to the extremities, and a couple of small, closed tears. The original price (15s net) is intact. Overall, a collector's-quality copy, nicely jacketed, of volume 2 of The Accursed Kings.

"In this exciting novel Maurice Druon has brought to life one of the lesser known dramas of the Middle Ages. Philip the Fair, the Iron King, has recently died and been succeeded by his son, Louis X. When the story opens, Louis' wife, convicted of adultery, is a prisoner in a fortress. How is the new King to be freed of her, so that he may marry again and assure the succession? This is the problem that the novel explores with precise attention to historical fact.
The Strangled Queen is the second installment of a vast historical panorama based on meticulous research and interpreted by a creative and scholarly imagination."
