1 Hayes, Joseph The Desperate Hours
New York Random House 1954 SIGNED by the Author
Very Good+ in a Very Good+ dustjacket. Fully bound in black cloth. The spine is stamped in purple and blue; the decorative front board in purple. (Significantly faded) blue topstain. 302pps. Stated Third Printing. There is mild rubbing to the board-edges and a slight bump at the top of the front board. Otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. The text is immaculate; no apparent reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The price-clipped dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has very light edgewear. SIGNED, dated (December, 1955), and inscribed by the author to the original owner on the ffep. A very nice copy of the author's first novel -- the basis, of course, for the film noir starring Humphrey Bogart.

"...Suppose a trio of desperate escaped convicts -- vicious and frightened -- simply took over your home?
Then you'd be in the same dreadful predicament faced by the Hilliards, whose quiet suburban home was turned into a jungle lair.
The Hilliards' nightmare began in broad daylight, when -- by an incredible twist of fate -- three escapees from the Federal prison at Terre Haute chose a home just outside the city limits of Indianapolis as a temporary hideout. The innocent courage of the helpless family -- husband, wife, daughter and small son; the arrogance of the trigger-happy criminals; the deep-seated desire for vengeance of a deputy sheriff -- these forces speed this taut story toward its terrifying end..."
