Mills, Hugh Prudence and The Pill Philadelphia Lippincott 1966 First Edition, First Printing Very Good in a Very Good dustjacket. Gray boards. Both the spine and the decorative front board are stamped in pink. Pink topstain. 138pps. Mild bumping to the upper tips. A previous owner's name is neatly penned on the front pastedown. Otherwise clean, square, and bright. The binding is slightly shaken, though sound. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, is lightly rubbed and has shallow chipping at the tips and the spine-ends. There is a small, closed tear at the bottom of the rear panel. The original price is intact.
"...What happens when a successful, wealthy, middle-aged banker and pillar of society named Gerald Hardcastle discovers that his wife possesses a supply of birth-control pills, even though their relationship has been platonic for fifteen years? Why, naturally, he switches the pills for aspirin tablets and waits to see what happens next. What happens next? His wife, his sister-in-law, his niece, his mistress, and the downstairs maid all become pregnant. In the deft, artful, smooth-as-cream style that has made him one of England's most successful playwrights, Hugh Mills spins out the consequences of Gerald's little ploy until all the chips have fallen where they may. Where a lesser talent might have succumbed to the temptations of vulgarity, Mr. Mills has fashioned a fresh and amusing bit of nonsense, at times rather like subdued mayhem, but always suffused with warmth and sympathy and decency..."
