1 Peake, Mervyn Mr. Pye
London Heinemann 1953 First Edition Hardcover Peake, Mervyn
Fine in a Fair dustjacket. Bound in full, light blue cloth. The spine is stamped in gilt. Octavo. 278pps., with numerous black-and-white drawings by Peake. There is very mild rubbing to the tips and the spine-ends, and a small and faint spot to the fore-edge, otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. The text is immaculate; no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a new mylar sleeve, has a large chip at the bottom of the front panel, a loss of the top 1/4" of the spine panel, and a tear -- mostly closed -- in the middle of the spine. The original price is intact. In short, an excellent copy in a flawed jacket which, with the exception of the large chip, would be graded a Very Good. A scarce and somewhat bawdy title by the author and artist better known for his 'Gormenghast Trilogy,' published between the second and third volumes of that magnum opus.

"...One fair summer's day, dapper and smiling, equipped with luggage sufficient for a longish stay, Mr. Pye steps from the Guernsey steamer on to the rocky soil of Sark. Mr. Pye, 'the man who follows the flights of his own soul: the man of private faith: the perfectionist: the sleuth of glory,' has arrived. His purpose is crusade and conversion; his target, the island's total population. With Miss Dredger conquered and Miss George convinced, the ground plans are laid and Mr. Pye's spiritual campaign is officially launched with the midnight picnic at Derrible. But, at the moment of universal revelation, the glory of the Great Pal is manifest to Mr. Pye alone, and in a form scarcely suitable to the eyes of earthbound humanity."
