1 Pressfield, Steven Gates of Fire : An Epic Novel of the Battle of Thermopylae
New York, NY, U.S.A. Doubleday Publishing 1998 0385492510 / 9780385492515 First Edition, First Printing Hard Cover
Near Fine in a Near Fine dustjacket. Beige boards with a crimson, gilt-stamped backstrip. Map of Greece and the Aegean endpapers. Octavo. 386pps. There is mild bumping to the spine-ends and three or four vaguely crimped page-corners. Otherwise clean, bright, square, and soundly bound. All tips are sharp. No previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, has slight touches of crinkling at the spine-ends; the original price (23.95) is intact. A very nice, collector's-quality copy.

"...Thousands of years ago, Herodotus and Plutarch immortalized Spartan society in their histories; but today, little is left of the ancient city or the social structure of this momentous culture. One of the few antiquarian marks of the civilization that has survived lies scores of miles away from Sparta, at a narrow Greek mountain pass called Thermopylae. It was here that three hundred of Sparta's finest warriors held back the invading millions of the Persian empire and valiantly gave their lives in the selfless service of democracy and freedom. A simple engraved stone marks their burial ground. Narrated by the sole survivor of the epic battle -- a squire in the Spartan heavy infantry -- 'Gates of Fire' is a depiction of one man's indoctrination into the Spartan way of life and death, and of the legendary men and women who gave the culture an immortal gravity. Culminating in the electrifying and horrifying epic battle, 'Gates of Fire' weaves history, mystery, and heartbreaking romance into a literary page-turner that brings the Homeric tradition into the 21st century."

[1995]. Near Fine in a Near Fine dustjacket. Blue-gray boards quarterbound in blue cloth. The spine is stamped in silver. Octavo. Salmon-colored endpapers. 252pps. There is rubbing to the tips and the spine-ends. Also, there is a very faint pencil-erasure in the top corner of the ffep. Otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. The text is immaculate; no reading wear and no previous ownership markings. "...The time: 1931. The place: the golf links at Krewe Island off Savannah's windswept Atlantic shore. The event: a once-in-a-lifetime 36-hole match...in which the stakes are higher than anyone imagined.
In Steven Pressfield's richly imagined, vividly detailed story, golf legends Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen are joined by a local unsung opponent, the troubled war hero Rannulph Junah. Played above raging Atlantic surf and under gathering storm clouds, their match is thrilling competition. But the key to the outcome lies with Bagger Vance, a caddie who carries the secret of the Authentic Swing. His mysterious powers guide the play and leave a lasting imprint on the lives he touches that day and in years to come.
A sports fable worthy of comparison to 'The Natural,' 'The Legend of Bagger Vance' reveals that, in life as well as golf, the real battle is not with outside opponents but with oneself..."
