Very Good in a Fine dustjacket. Bound in full pebbled brown cloth. The spine is stamped in gilt. Octavo. 179pps., plus a few pages of illustrations. Stated First Edition. There is mild rubbing to the edges of the cloth and faint touches of dustspotting to the edges of the textblock, otherwise overall clean, bright, square, and soundly bound. No previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a new mylar sleeve, is as new except for a small, closed tear in the front flap; the original price is intact. This jacket was acquired from the estate of William Crawford, publisher of Fantasy Press, and had been stored flat for decades until having been recently married to this volume; its panels are brilliant white, pink, and blue. An excellent, collector's-quality copy. Jacket design by Lou Goldstone. Contains the title story and 'The Black Goldfish,' a story involving scientific research, international intrigue, and Cleo, the Black Goldfish.
"...The first Cosmic Geoid was discovered in 1879 by the Lascelles paleontological expedition. And after three hundred years of constant searching forty-three more were found.
When the technicians opened the first geoid they discovered small plates of some black metal covered on both sides with minute characters. But the key to the mystery of the symbols etched so deeply into the strange metal plates was more difficult than the mere finding of the specimens. The scientists were in much the same position as a savage might be if asked to describe the most intricate apparatus of modern technology and to explain its underlying science. Concepts, not words, were the scienctists irremediable lack.
But in three centuries of the most intense study the Alliance of World Scientists had read enough of the records to know that the full history of the death of the Eosian universe, which the laborious translation of the plates was revealing, contained a message of urgent importance for the survival of our race..."
